HEART Centre
About this venue
HEART, the Headingley Enterprise and Arts Centre, is a community arts centre on Bennett Road in the old Headingley Primary School, a Victorian school building. After five years of work by local residents to save it, the building reopened as HEART in 2011. It's the main project of the Headingley Development Trust, a community business run by local people. HEART runs without grants, on money and volunteer time from people who live nearby.
The main hall, the Shire Oak Hall, has a stage, a grand piano, PA and lighting, and holds up to 150 people. Regular nights include Tuesday Night Live music, film screenings and poetry open mics, and there are jazz gigs too. The centre also has three galleries with exhibitions that change every six weeks, and the Assembly Bar & Kitchen cafe serves food and local beers.
The building has wide doors, ramps and a lift to every floor, accessible toilets on every floor, a Changing Places toilet and a hearing loop. There are two disabled parking bays by the front entrance, and HEART offers a carer's discount.
From Leeds bus station, the 23, 25, 27 and 28 buses stop at St Michael's Church, three minutes' walk away. Burley Park station is about a 17 minute walk and Headingley station about 21 minutes. There's a small car park on site for people using the building, first come first served, and plenty of bike parking.
