Leeds Caribbean & African Centre

About this venue
The Leeds Caribbean & African Centre, formerly the Leeds West Indian Centre, is on Laycock Place in Chapeltown, just north of Leeds city centre. It opened in the early 1980s as a purpose-built home for the Caribbean community, on land where Victorian terraced houses once stood. It's still a hub for the Caribbean and African communities in Chapeltown. The steering group behind the building was chaired by Gertrude Paul, Leeds' first Black head teacher.
The centre has long been a venue for club nights and live music. Performers have ranged from local sound system Iration Steppas to international acts on tour, and it has hosted Carnival events since 1985. Gigs happen in the main room, which has a stage and a bar. The centre also runs regular community events, including exercise classes, women's and men's groups, dominoes and cards every Sunday and a monthly vinyl night.
